Peer Leadership.
Being a leader is not limited to holding an official position. There are many concepts in my leadership philosophy that speak to the idea of peer leadership: leading from the side.
A great team is not made up of mindless followers, but instead has leaders embedded throughout. These are the people who are willing to be courageous. They will speak up when the room falls silent, ensuring that the group stays true to its core values and goals. They are willing to do the hard work of turning great ideas into reality. They change the garbage, add paper to the photocopier, and notice when someone has a rough day. Often, it is the peer leaders, not the hierarchical leader, who inspire greatness in their colleagues.
In all aspects of life, I strive embody my leadership philosophy. In the context of education this means speaking on behalf of students, encouraging instructors, and inspiring everyone to grow their passions. I often cannot solve the problems that someone brings to me; however, I can listen with compassion, provide a new perspective or context, or search for a solution alongside them. I can share excitement about successes and ideas, and help to ensure they find the right landing place in the organization.
